Slovenia is situated in south central Europe. The country is surrounded by Austria to the north, Hungary to the northeast, Croatia to the southeast and south and Italy and the Adriatic Sea to the west. Formerly a constituent republic of Yugoslavia, Slovenia proclaimed its independence in June 1991. Moreover Slovenia became the member of United Nations in May 1992 and a full member of the European Union in 2004. Ljublijana is the capital and largest city of Slovenia.

Description : Three equal horizontal bands of white (top), blue, and red, with the Slovenian seal (a shield with the image of Triglav, Slovenia's highest peak, in white against a blue background at the center; beneath it are two wavy blue lines depicting seas and rivers, and above it are three six-pointed stars arranged in an inverted triangle, which are taken from the coat of arms of the Counts of Celje; the seal is located in the upper hoist side of the flag centered in the white and blue bands.
Slovenia    History Top

Pre-History: - Slavic inhabitants of the today's Slovenians were settled in Slovenia in the 6th century. The Slavic Duchy of Catatonia was established in the 7th century. In 745, Catatonia lost its independence and being absorbed by the Frankish empire.
The Austro-Hungarian Empire: - During the 14th century, most of regions of Slovania passed into ownership of the Habsburgs whose lands later established the Austro-Hungarian Empire, with Slovenians inhabiting all or most of the provinces of Carniola, Gorizia and Gradisca and parts of the provinces of Istia, Carinthia and Styria.
The kingdom of Yugoslavia: - In 1918, the Austro-Hungarian monarchy was fell down, so Slove nians formed part of the State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs, which joined the kingdom of serbs, Croats and Slovenes, later renamed the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.
The Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia: - After the re-establishment of Yugoslavia, Slovenia became a part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.
Today's Slovenia: - Today's Slovenia was established on 25th of June 1991 upon its independence from Yugoslavia.
NATO and EU membership: - Slovenia became a member of NATO on 29th of March 2004 and on 1st of May, 2004 it became a member of the European Union. Slovenia will hold the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2008.

Education: - The government of Slovenia requires that all children attend school between the ages of 6 & 14. Almost all Slovenes over the age of ten can read and write and 68% of students receive postsecondary or higher levels of education.
Slovenia has about 30 institutions of higher education. The University of Ljubljana is the oldest university of the country, which was established in 1595.
The Slovenian education system is divided in about five ports such as,
· Pre-school education
· Basic education, which includes about primary and lower secondary education.
· Secondary education
· Higher vocational education and,
· Higher education.
Literature: - Primoz Trubar was a great protestant reformer of 15th century, who wrote two books, Cathechismns and Abecedarium, which were published in 1550 in Tubingen, Germany.
Baron Janez Vajkard Balvosor was a great Slovenian writer of 16th century. He wrote the Glory of the Duchy of Carniola, which is a brief description of Carniola.
Th epoet France Preseren and writer Ivan Cankar are also outstanding examples of Slovenian writers, who were the great writers of 18th century.
Art: - Slovenia is a homeland of great musicians, composers and painters. Slavko Avsenik, Laibach, Vlado kreslin, Zoran Predin, Pero Lovsin, New Swing Quartet, DJ Umek, Siddharta, Magnitico and Atomik Harmonik are great and famous Slovenian musicians.
Jacobus Gallus was a great composer of Slovenia of 15th century, who greatly influenced central European classical music. Moreover Bojan Adamic was a renowned film music composer of 20th century. Ivana Kobilea and Rihard Jakopic are great Slovenian painters. Joze Plecnik is a great Slovenian architect, who achieved great fame.
Film: - Slovenian cinema has more than a century long tradition. Karol Grossmann, Janko Ravnik, Ferdo Delak, France Kosmac, Joze Pogacnik, Matjaz Klopcic, Joze Gale, Bostjan Hladnik and Karpo Godina are outstanding examples of Slovenian filmmakers. Janez burger, Jan Cvitkovic, Damjan Kozole, janez lapjne and Maja Weiss are most notable film directors, of Slovenia.

Location: - Slovenia is a coastal Alpine country, which located in Southern Central Europe. It is surrounded by Italy to the west, the Adriatic Sea to the southwest, Croatia to the south and east, Hungary to the northeast and Austria to the north.
Mountains: - Slovenia's highest peak is Trigav, which is about 2,864 meters high. Slovenia's average height above the sea level is 557 meters.
Forests: - Forests cover approximately one half of the country, so Slovenia becomes the third most forested country in Europe, after Finland and Sweden.
Landscape: - Forests surround Slovenia's about one half of the land. Grassland covers about 5,593 sq. km. Of the country and fields and gardens 2,471 sq. km. There are also 363 sq. km. Of orchards and 216 sq. km. Of Vineyards.
Area: - The total area of Slovenia is about 20,273 sq. km.
Population: - According to the 2005 estimate, the total population of Slovenia was about 20,03,358 and its population density was about 99 persons per sq. km.
Climate: - Slovenia's climate is Sub Mediterranean on the coast, Alpine in the coast, Alpine in the mountains and continental with mild to hot summers and cold winters in the plateaus and valleys to the east. The average temperatures are - 2.c in January and 21.c in July. The average rainfall is 1,000 millimeters for the coast, up to 3,500 m.m. for the Alps, 800 m.m. for southeast and 1,400 m.m. for central Slovenia.
Capital: - Ljubljana is a capital as well as the largest city of the country.
