The Faroe Islands are situated in the North Atlantic Ocean between Scotland, Norway and Iceland. They have been independent region of the kingdom of Denmark since 1948. The Faroe Islands is the archipelagoes, which means the Faroe Islands are a group of islands. The Faroes have closely connection with Iceland, Shetland, the Orkney Islands, the Outer Hebrides and Green Land. Faroe Islands were disconnected from Norway in 1814. The Foroes have their own representatives in the Nordic Council. Faroese and Danish are official languages of Faroe Islands. Torshavn is a capital as well as the largest city of the archipelagoes.

White with a red cross outlined in blue extending to the edges of the flag; the vertical part of the cross is shifted toward the hoist side in the style of the Dannebrog (Danish flag).
The early history of the Faroe Islands is very clear. At the beginning of the9th century, the emigrants, who left Norway, settled in the islands. In the 11th century, Sigmund, whose family had developed in the southern islands but had been destroyed by invaders from the northern islands, was sent from Norway from which he had escaped to take possession of the islands for Olaf Tryggvason, king of Norway. He firstly established Christianity in the islands. But he was murdered and due to this Norwegian supremacy was confirmed.
Until 1380, Islands were totally controlled by Norway but after that Norway entered into a union with Denmark, which gradually evolved into the double monarchy Denmark Norway. Islands were disconnected from Norway and Denmark controlled over islands in 1814, by the Treaty of Kiel. Now, in 1814 Denmark retained possession of the Faroe Islands.
The monopoly trade over the Faroe Islands was abolished in 1856. Since then the country developed towareds a moedern fisher nation with its own fleet. In 1888, a struggle started in Faroe Islands for language.
On April 12, 1940 the Faroes were occupied by British troops after the invasion of Denmark by Nazi Germany. This action was taken to turn away a possible German occupation of the islands, which would have had very grave consequences for the course of the Battle of the Atlantic. The British, Royal Engineers in 1942-43, built the Bagar Airport. After the war the islands were controlled by Denmark in 1948 a home rule was granted.
In 1973, the Faroes declined the join Denmark in entering the European Community. Due to the collapse of the fishing industry, the islands suffered economic problems in 1990, but after that they tried to solve the economic problems and diversified the economy.
The Faroes have their own culture, but it holds elements in common with Norway, Iceland and Denmark.
Faroese Scientific Society: - The Faroese scientific society was founded in 1952 with the aim of promoting co-operation in all educational fields, collecting scientific literature and publishing the results of research on or carried out in the Faroe Islands.
Literature: - In the book Nineteen Eighty four by George Orwell a Floating Fortess has been anchored between the Faroe Islands and Iceland on 4th April 1984. The climax of John Buchan's novel "The Isle of Sheep" takes place on the Faroes.
Food: - meat, potatoes and fresh vegetables make Traditional Faroese food. Mutton is the basis of many meals and one of the most popular treats is skerpikjot, which is made by wind-dried mutton. The drying shed, which is known, as an hjallur is a standard feature in many Faroese homes. Other traditional foods are rast kjot and rastan fisk.

Population: - According to the 205 estimates, the total population of the islands was about 47,017 and their population density was about 33.1 square.
Climate: - The Faroe Islands have cool summers and mild winters with a generally overeats sky and frequent fog and heavy winds.
Capital: - Torshavn is a capital as well as the largest city of the islands.

Key Industries: - Before 1856, the monopoly trade of islands was fishery industries. At that time the whole economy was totally dependent upon fishery industries. But in 1856, fishery trade over the islands was abolished. The Faroese hope to broaden their economical base by building new fish processing plants. Petroleum found close to the Faroese area give hope for deposits in the immediate area, which many lay the basis to sustained economic prosperity Since 2000, new information technology and business projects have been fostered in the Faroe Islands to attract new investment.
Transportation is also source of income. Today about 80% of the population in the islands is connected by under ocean tunnels, bridges and embankments which binds the 3 largest islands and 3 comparatively large islands to the northeast together, while the other and large islands to the south of the main area are connected to the main area with brand new modern fast ferries. There are good roads also.
GDP: - According to the 2005 estimate, total GDP of the Faroe Islands was about $1.0 billion and its per capita GDP was about $22,000.

The majority of the population is ethnic Faroese of Norse and Celtic descent.
Religion: - According to official statistics from 2002, 84.1% of the people followed the state church, which is a form of Lutheranism.
Faroese and Danish are official languages of Faroe Islands. Faroese are spoken in the entire country while the majority of people also speak Danish. Young people in cities, who are tought English in school, also speak English.
